Based on nothing more than having breezed through the Lunar X-Prize site, a couple conversations, and some half-baked ideas… I think we should pull together a team.

The Google Lunar X PRIZE is a $30 million competition for the first privately funded team to send a robot to the moon, travel 500 meters and transmit video, images and data back to the Earth.

I have no illusions that my dusty degree in astropysics is going to get us there, but it would be interesting to gather together some people interested in the project to see what we can collectively come up with. If nothing else, it’s likely we’ll work out a couple ideas that could benefit other teams in the spirit of coopetition. After all, it’s not really about winning the cash prize, but rather in moving the ball forward (regardless of who gets the trophy).

It’s still early days in this idea, so feel free to drop me a line if you’re interested in joining the party… especially if you’ve got a Saturn V sitting around looking for some use.
